Wayfinding: City of Marshall

City of Marshall Wayfinding and Environmental Graphics
fd2s was hired by the city of Marshall, Texas to recommend a wayfinding strategy and design. I was involved in the initial concept phase, and responded to the design brief with a conservative post and panel design. (Click on images for larger, more detail)

We conceived a flexible design, as this concept will likely be used in many different configurations and scales, as the needs and location for the signs change.

The image above illustrates some of the many possible sign configurations. The model below suggests the use of one configuration at an intersection.

The “double twin bracket” theme was carried over throughout the system.

Part of the Marshall revitalization plan calls for the creation of an entertainment district. To direct traffic, and serve as a beacon to drivers on nearby I-20, we proposed the use of searchlights as well as custom overpass signage and lighting. It was my job to illustrate these concepts. Below you can see the original daytime photos on the left, and the photomontages for the concepts. (Click on images for larger, more detail)

SketchUp Photomontage: Estancia

I created this cantilevered sign inspired by the silo on site of this Brazilian Restaurant in Austin, Texas. In order to better project the impact of my design, I first produced a SketchUp model. I then Photoshopped the model into an actual photo of the restaurant’s driveway:

Here’s a street view (courtesy of Google Maps), showing the finished product.

Sign Design, Photomontage: Berry Hill

When Berry Hill Baja Grill approached my employer sign company at the time, they presented us with a particular dilemma. While their signage square footage allowance was plenty for a large sign, the individual faces of their hexagonal facade were not.
I conceived the idea of a radiused sign wrapping around the two contiguous planes, thus enabling them to use their total allowed square footage.
This, of course, if the kind of idea that doesn’t help clients much unless you can illustrate it. So I did, creating day and nighttime versions:

I think the photo reflects how close I came to realistically I portrayed the design solution:

Sign Design: Hog Island Blade

As a designer for a sign company, you’re tasked many times with creating the clients identity. Faced with this opportunity, I went for the appearance of a classic carved sign for this internally illuminated sign. Here are two early versions.
